The other day, I went to Cebu Island in the Philippines for the first time in four years. Mactan-Cebu International Airport had been renovated when I traveled there just before the coronavirus, so the journey from arriving at the airport to Cebu city seen from the car window after being picked up had not changed much since then, and in fact, it was a little different. It felt like the traffic congestion had eased. On the day I arrived, I went to buy some things, but I was surprised at how much the prices at my favorite supermarket fluctuated! The local beer (San Miguel) was as cheap as ever, but what surprised me most was the bananas from the Philippines that were sold at the supermarket. It used to be cheap because it’s local ingredients, but when I saw the price tag, I was surprised at 454 pesos. It is about 1200 yen in Japanese yen. I asked a few people locally, but they couldn’t figure out the reason. Maybe you added one digit incorrectly on the price tag? There was an opinion, but I don’t know the truth. . . Is the banana example a temporary situation or a misoperation? Maybe, but after that, when I went to a local restaurant, I felt that prices in the Philippines had gone up a little overall, and they didn’t feel as cheap as they used to. For example, a local restaurant that comes with rice and a small meat dish. It costs about 100 pesos, but in Japanese yen it’s about 260 yen. Considering the quality, it doesn’t feel very cheap.
